The bird's territorial call sounds like laughter. According to Aboriginal legend, the laughter of the kookaburra is a sign for the sky people to light the great fire – the sun.

The laughing kookaburra retains the same partner for life. Adult non-breeding kookaburras help their parents defend their territory and raise their young.
